Outsourcing web design and branding to Morocco: how it works in practice

Morocco sits one hour from London time and a three-hour flight from most of Western Europe, with studios that work in English, French and Arabic. It suits companies that want a design team in their own working day. The checks are the same as with any agency, plus three that are specific to working across a border.

Most articles on outsourcing compare hourly rates. Rates matter less than whether the project is finished, owned by you and maintainable afterwards. Here is what working with a Moroccan studio actually involves, from the side of the studio.

Time zones: the practical advantage

Morocco keeps GMT+1 all year, and moves to GMT for the month of Ramadan.

You are inDifference with MoroccoWhat it means
United Kingdom, summerNoneSame working day
United Kingdom, winterMorocco is 1 hour aheadSame working day
Paris, Brussels, Geneva0 to 1 hourSame working day
US East CoastMorocco is 4 to 6 hours aheadYour morning is our afternoon: daily overlap
US West CoastMorocco is 7 to 9 hours aheadShort overlap; work runs on written handovers

For a design project this is the real difference with studios further east: feedback given in the morning comes back the same afternoon, not the next day.

Languages

French and Arabic are the working languages of Moroccan business, and English is standard in studios that take international work. This matters beyond meetings. If your product ships to France, the Gulf or North Africa, the same team can design in left-to-right and right-to-left scripts and write native French or Arabic copy rather than translate it.

What is worth outsourcing, and what is not

  • Works well: brand identity, website design and build, e-commerce stores, landing pages, content production, photo and video, ongoing design support.
  • Needs more care: anything that depends on local market knowledge you have and the studio does not. Give it in the brief: your customers, your competitors, the words they use.
  • Keep in-house: the decisions. An outside team can propose a positioning; it cannot own it.

The contract: five clauses to have in writing

  1. Scope and deliverables. The list of pages, templates, files and formats.
  2. Intellectual property. Paying for work does not transfer copyright by itself in most legal systems. The contract should assign all rights to you on final payment, for all media, worldwide, with no time limit.
  3. Ownership of accounts. Domain, hosting, analytics, ad accounts and the store itself are opened in your name, with the studio added as a user.
  4. Revisions and timeline. How many rounds, by what date, and what happens when feedback is late.
  5. Confidentiality. An NDA if the project touches anything unreleased.

Payment

Moroccan studios invoice foreign clients in euros, pounds or dollars and are paid by international bank transfer. A deposit followed by milestone payments is the norm. Ask for a proper invoice with the company’s registration details each time: you need it for your books, and it tells you that you are dealing with a registered business.

Data protection

Morocco has its own data protection law (law 09-08) and a regulator, the CNDP. At the time of writing, it does not have an adequacy decision from the European Commission or the UK. In practice this is simple to handle for a design project: keep your customer data on your own systems, host the site where your policy requires, give the studio access only to what the work needs, and sign standard contractual clauses if personal data has to be processed.

How to run a first project safely

  1. Start with something bounded. A landing page, a brand refresh, a product shoot. Two to four weeks, a fixed price.
  2. Write the brief once. Goal, audience, references, what exists already, deadline, budget range.
  3. Agree one channel and one weekly call. Scattered messages are how remote projects slip.
  4. Ask to see work in progress. A shared design file or a staging link, not a reveal at the end.
  5. Check the handover. Source files, logins, documentation. You should be able to leave with everything.

How to check a studio before you sign

  • Live websites you can open on your phone, not screenshots.
  • A named person who will do the work, and a call with them.
  • A sample contract and a sample invoice.
  • A reference you can email.

Questions

What time zone is Morocco in?

GMT+1 all year, moving to GMT during Ramadan. That is the same hour as the UK in summer and one hour ahead in winter.

Do Moroccan agencies work in English?

Studios that take international work do. French and Arabic are also working languages, which helps if your product is sold in those markets.

Who owns the design when I outsource it?

You do, provided the contract assigns the rights to you. Have the assignment written into the contract or the invoice, effective on final payment.

How do I pay an agency in Morocco?

By international bank transfer against an invoice in euros, pounds or dollars, usually a deposit and then milestone payments.
